Game Rules

How To Play:

Pick 5 numbers from 1 - 59, then pick your Powerball number from 1 - 39.

Pick your own numbers or let the computer pick them for you by asking for an easy pick.

Purchase up to 10 consecutive drawings at a time.

Drawings held at 9:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Win the jackpot by matching all 5 white numbers and the Powerball. Other prizes also awarded.

Powerball prizes must be claimed within 365 days of the drawing for which they were eligible.

Power Play Feature:

Simply ask for the Power Play with your Powerball purchase.

For an extra $1 per play you could multiply your prize from 2 to 5 times (except the jackpot).

The Power Play multiplier number is chosen by a random number generator during the Powerball drawings held at 9:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays.

How much a winner's prize will be multiplied is determined by the Power Play multiplier number.

When you choose the Power Play and match 5 white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize), the multiplier will always be 5 -- you'll win $1 million!*

*If winners at Match 5 with Power Play level exceed the available prize fund, prizes may be paid on a pari-mutuel basis and be lower than the $1 million prize.

Prizes & Odds:

Jackpot starts at $20 Million!

* The jackpot prize will be divided equally among multiple winners based on the amount available to the lottery for the jackpot prize pool. The set prize amounts published here are based on the expected number of winners sharing in the prize pool. In some cases, these prizes may be paid on a pari-mutuel basis and will be lower than these prizes levels.

Participating Lotteries:

Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the Virgin Islands

A Note About Jackpots:

You have 60 days to decide whether to collect a jackpot prize with the annuity or cash option. If you select the annuity option and the cost to purchase the annuity is less than $250,000, the lottery may elect to pay that prize as a cash option prize. If you select the cash option, the prize will be a single cash payment equal to the amount available to the lottery for the jackpot prize pool. The cash prize is estimated to be approximately one-half of the estimated annuitized jackpot (the advertised jackpot paid over 30 years), depending on current interest rates.

Match 5 Bonus:

While the Match 5 Bonus is in effect, the jackpot only grows by $25 million between drawings. The rest of the money that would have gone to the jackpot instead goes into the “bonus pool” to be divided up among players who win Powerball’s second prize ($200,000) by matching the first five numbers but not the Powerball. When the jackpot is won, those players win their regular prize plus a share of the Match 5 Bonus pool - and their prizes are paid in a lump-sum.

Fraud Alert!

Attention Powerball Players:

It has come to our attention that fraudulent e-mails are being sent out promising to pay Powerball prizes. These e-mails are NOT from Powerball, the Iowa Lottery, or the Multi-State Lottery Association; although it may appear to be from an Iowa Lottery official. The e-mails claim that the recipient has won a prize in Powerball or Australian Powerball or some other non-existent international version of Powerball. These e-mails include the Powerball name, our logo and links to a copy of an old Powerball® Web page. The authors of these e-mails are NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE TRUE POWERBALL GAME and are illegally misappropriating the Powerball name, logo, and Web site. YOU SHOULD NOT SEND ANY MONEY OR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE in an effort to collect the promised “winnings.” The web site has been shut down, but it may appear on another hosting service.
