CLIVE, Iowa — A lucky player in northwest Iowa is the state's first big winner in the Millionaire for Life™ game.
The winning ticket, which was purchased at Brew, 210 W. Main St. in Sac City, matched all five white balls won a prize of $100,000 a year for life in Friday's drawing.
It's the first second-tier prize won in the Millionaire for Life game, which debuted in February. The game features nightly drawings and a pair of top prizes that last as long as you do: $1 million a year for life, or $100,000 a year for life.
"Millionaire for Life was designed to offer life-changing prizes every single night, and now Iowa has its first big winner to prove it," said Iowa Lottery CEO Matt Strawn. "We can't wait to meet the winner!"
The winning numbers in Friday's drawing were 14-16-21-43-51 and Millionaire Ball™ 3.
Here's more on Iowa's big win.
Annuity vs. Lump Sum
Prizes at the top two levels in Millionaire for Life must be claimed at the Iowa Lottery's main office in Clive. These prizes are truly for life, with a minimum guaranteed payout of 20 years. Winners also have the option of a lump-sum payment, which for the Sac City prize is $2.2 million. Both options are subject to applicable state and federal withholding taxes.
Nationwide Wins
The Sac City win was the second big prize won in the game since its February debut, and the first prize won at the Match-5 level. A ticket purchased in Ohio matched all five white balls and the Millionaire Ball™ to win $1 million a year for life in the drawing on April 27.
Bigger Prizes, Better Odds
Millionaire for Life offers the highest daily jackpot in lottery history with the best odds of any major draw game. The odds of winning the top prize of $1 million a year for life are about 1 in 22.9 million, while the odds of winning $100,000 a year for life are about 1 in 5.7 million. The overall odds of winning are 1 in 8.46.
In Iowa, 73,147 players have won more than $3.1 million in prizes since the game's February debut.
How to Play
Players in Millionaire for Life choose five numbers from a pool of 58 for the white balls and one out of five numbers for the Millionaire Ball. Players can win the game's top prize of $1 million a year for life by matching all six numbers selected in one of its drawings. The game's second prize – for matching the first five numbers but missing the Millionaire Ball – is $100,000 a year for life. Other prize levels in the game range from $8 up to $7,500.
