CLIVE, Iowa — What started as a Sunday night beer run for a Des Moines man ended with a $50,000 lottery win.
“It's a rush. It's a happy rush,” Andrew Solliday said on Tuesday as he claimed his “$50,000 Super Crossword” top prize at the lottery's main office in Clive. “I just feel bubbly.”
Solliday bought his winning ticket at QuikTrip, 1501 E. Grand Ave. in Des Moines. He took it home to scratch, and quickly realized that this ticket was different than others he had played. The more words he uncovered, the bigger his prize grew.
“By seven (words), I'm going, 'Wait a minute!' But eight, I'm like, 'OK, this is going to stop sooner or later,'” Solliday recalled with a laugh. “And here's nine: That's $5,000 for nine words. It's got to stop now. And then that 10th one came up and it's like, 'Wow!' Everyone in the whole house heard me.”
Solliday, a classic car enthusiast, said he plans to use some of his winnings for car parts and home improvements.
The $50,000 Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game that features 105 top prizes of $50,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.26. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
