CLIVE, Iowa — A West Des Moines man played it cool when he realized he won a $100,000 lottery prize.
“I didn't jump up and down or anything. I was really quiet about it,” said Jeff Spiess.
He and his wife were both scratching “X the Money” tickets after dinner when he uncovered his top prize. Spiess bought his winning ticket at Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh, 425 S. Jordan Creek Pkwy. in West Des Moines, and claimed his prize Thursday at the lottery's main office in Clive.
Spiess said he checked his ticket several times and scanned it with the Iowa Lottery mobile app, which confirmed his win. He remained calm as he told his wife to watch his phone's screen as he scanned the ticket a second time.
“I showed her and I didn't tell her up front,” Spiess said.
He said she responded with a gasp and a hug after she saw the $100,000 prize.
Spiess, who is 59 and works for a financial company, said he may put his winnings toward paying off bills, saving up for retirement and buying a new car.
