CLIVE, Iowa — A man can officially declare his bad-luck streak over after winning a $100,000 lottery prize.
Bret Chickering bought his “20X” scratch ticket at Hy-Vee, 2003 Chatburn Ave. in Harlan, and claimed his prize Wednesday at the lottery's main office in Clive.
Chickering, 66, said his big win comes after several years of health challenges.
“I went through cancer, I'm three years cancer-free now,” he said. “I fell a year or so ago and broke my hip, had a hip replacement. And the radiation from cancer took all my teeth and that cost me a lot.”
Chickering said he feels like his lottery win has turned his bad luck around.
“It did, which usually doesn't happen. I don't usually have that good of luck!” he said. “This helps a lot.”
He said he will save most of his winnings and plans to continue working at a manufacturing facility in Harlan.
20X is a $10 scratch game that features seven top prizes of $100,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.15. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
