Knoxville Man Wins $50,000 Powerball Double Play® Prize

Mark Swanson Wins Big in Saturday's Drawing

CLIVE, Iowa — A Knoxville man woke up his wife to tell her he'd won a $50,000 Powerball Double Play® prize.

“She kind of looked at it and rolled over,” Mark Swanson said on Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's main office in Clive. “About two seconds later, she rolled over and said, 'Did that say $50,000?!'”

Swanson, 61, purchased his winning ticket at Walmart, 814 W. Bell Ave. in Knoxville.

“I went out to Walmart to get my daughter-in-law a Mother's Day card and walked by the (lottery) kiosk there and decided to stop to buy a Powerball ticket,” Swanson said. “I ended up getting the Double Play and it worked out really well.”

Double Play is an optional $1 add-on feature that gives players a second chance to win with their Powerball numbers in a separate drawing, held immediately after the regular Powerball drawing.

Swanson matched four of five black drawing numbers and the Powerball in Saturday's Double Play drawing, and was just one number away from winning the game's top prize of $10 million.

The winning numbers in Saturday's Double Play drawing were 24-36-43-47-69 and Powerball 22.

Swanson, the detail manager for a car dealership, said he already has plans for his winnings.

“I'm going to probably pay off my truck and a few other bills and just keep working,” he said. “That helps out a bunch.”

Powerball began in April 1992 in 15 states, with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million. It has since grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today, Powerball is played by 48 lotteries, with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
