CLIVE, Iowa — A southern Iowa woman who won a $10,000 lottery prize on her husband's birthday says she already knows how she'll spend her winnings.
"We're buying him a motorcycle," Danielle DeKoning of Centerville said on Tuesday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's main office in Clive. "He's been wanting one for two years. He already has his license. I'm like, 'OK, whenever I win big on lottery, I will buy you one!' And it just happens to be his birthday, so it's perfect!"
DeKoning, 38, said her husband, Jonathan, has had his eye on a motorcycle for some time, and now the timing is just right. She won the big prize playing the Iowa Lottery's "$100,000 Mega Crossword" scratch game.
She bought her ticket at Bratz Oil Corp., 102 Drake Ave. in Centerville, and at first thought she'd only won $20 until she scanned it double-check her win.
"It's a whole freak-out moment," DeKoning said with a laugh. "You're like, 'Wait, what just really happened right here? Am I reading this right?'"
After checking the ticket three more times, the reality of her big win began to sink in. She messaged her husband but hadn't yet heard back from him before she claimed her prize.
"I'm sure he's all antsy and jumping up and down," DeKoning said with a laugh.
