Alan Haubrich Claims Top Prize in InstaPlay Lottery Game

CLIVE, Iowa — Alan Haubrich is a man of routine: Every day starts with a 6 a.m. at Yesway, 1224 N. Federal Ave. in Mason City, where he grabs a coffee and chats with friends.

But one recent pre-dawn visit ended with a jolt he never expected: a $25,000 lottery win.

“It's just awe-inspiring,” Alan Haubrich said on Monday as he claimed his prize at the Iowa Lottery's Mason City office.

Haubrich, 70, of Mason City, won the first top prize in the “Plu$ the Ca$h” InstaPlay game. He said he did a double-take when he uncovered the big prize and double-checked it on the store's self-checker.

“I matched a number, 1, and I looked down and it said $25,000,” Haubrich said. “I couldn't believe it, so I went over and checked it. Then I told my friends in there what I'd just done. I was just in awe.”

Haubrich, who also won an InstaPlay prize of nearly $49,000 in 2021, said that after claiming his latest lofty prize, he plans to pay off a loan, and put the rest of his winnings into the bank for now.

InstaPlay combines features of scratch and lotto games. Tickets are printed on demand from lottery terminals rather than being pre-printed, and are sometimes called scratchless because there is no security coating to remove.

InstaPlay games range in price from $1 to $30. For more information, visit www.ialottery.com.
