CLIVE, Iowa — Sometimes, luck comes down to one small decision. For a Fort Dodge woman, adding the $1 Powerball Double Play® option to her ticket turned a routine lottery ticket purchase into a $50,000 payday.
Double Play is an optional $1 add-on feature that gives players a second chance to win with their Powerball numbers in a separate drawing, held immediately after the regular Powerball drawing.
“I always say, 'Give me all the extras,'” Harrison said on Tuesday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's main office in Clive. “It worked out very well for me.”
Harrison was on her way home from work last week when she stopped to buy a ticket at The Station, 2320 N. 15th St. in Fort Dodge.
“The next day, I guess it was Sunday, I read there was a $50,000 winner where I had bought the ticket,” she said. “I really didn't think much of it.”
When she finally got around to checking her ticket this week, she wasn't prepared for the result.
“It was $50,000 when I checked it on my phone,” she said. “It's like, 'Whoa! Is this right?' so I just kept checking it and checking it and checking it. It's like, 'Yeah, it is right!'”
The winning numbers in Saturday's Double Play drawing were 2-9-10-14-36 and Powerball 23.
Harrison said she and her husband plan to save the winnings for now.
“We're both older, semi-retired, so we'll just put it away for a rainy day,” she said.
