Tama County Man Wins $1 Million Prize

William Zak

CLIVE, Iowa — A Tama County man has won a $1 million Powerball® prize on a ticket he purchased in Benton County.

William Zak of Dysart won big in the drawing on Dec. 20. His ticket matched the first five numbers and was just one number away from winning that night's $1.434 billion jackpot, missing only the Powerball. It was one of eight tickets across the country to win a $1 million prize in that night's drawing.

Zak purchased his ticket at Kwik Star, 1208 W. 13th St. in Vinton, and claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's main office in Clive.

The winning numbers in the Dec. 20 drawing were 4-5-28-52-69 and Powerball 20. The Power Play® multiplier was 3.

The game's jackpot continued to grow until Wednesday, when it was won by a ticket purchased in Arkansas. The $1.817 billion annuitized jackpot was the second-largest in U.S. history.

Players in Powerball choose their first five numbers from a pool of 69, and another number – called the Powerball – from a separate pool of 26. The Power Play option is available for an extra $1 per play.

Since getting its start in April 1992 in 15 states with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million, Powerball has grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today Powerball is played by 48 lotteries across the country with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

One other big lottery prize is still unclaimed more than six weeks after it was won. A Mega Millions® ticket purchased at Kwik Star, 1200 Chatham Ave. in Norwalk, won $3 million in the drawing on Nov. 11. That prize must be claimed by May 11, 2026.
