CLIVE, Iowa — A northern Iowa man has won a $10,000 lottery prize just one month after his retirement.

Ted Knutson of Clarion won the big prize playing the Iowa Lottery's “$100,000 Mega Crossword” scratch game. Knutson bought his ticket at Yesway, 300 Central Ave. in Clarion.

“I drove around with it in my truck all day, and I finally scratched it when I got home, in my driveway,” said Knutson, who retired in April after a 25-year career as a police officer. “I was just kind of shocked, stunned. I couldn't believe it. This was the most amount of money I'd ever won in my life.”

Knutson took the ticket in to show his wife, and they both scanned it with the Iowa Lottery mobile app to confirm the win. He added that he and his wife plan to put the bulk of their winnings on an upcoming trip.

Knutson and his wife are planning a trip to Texas and Arizona to revisit locations tied to his 22 years of military service.

“That'll pay our way in gas and hotel accommodations and have a little more to spend,” he said.

The $100,000 Mega Crossword game is a $10 scratch game that features 46 top prizes of $100,000, 92 prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.29. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
