Iowa County Woman Beats The Cold With A $30,000 Lottery Win

Sheila Gronewold Claims Top Prize In 'Surprise Package' Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa – An Iowa County woman says she has plans to help move her daughter's family from California back to Iowa after winning the lottery.

Sheila Gronewold of Parnell said she redeemed some winning lottery tickets Dec. 31 for a couple more tickets and a "Surprise Package" scratch ticket she bought ended up winning one of the game's $30,000 top prizes. She said she bought her winning ticket at Casey's, 602 S. Highland St. in Williamsburg.

"I kind of barricaded myself in the house Saturday and I'm like, 'Ok. Sunday I have to get out of the house; I have to go do something to conquer this fear of the winter,'" Gronewold told lottery employees Jan. 2 as she claimed her prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Gronewold, 51, said her husband actually scratched off the winning ticket.

"Sometimes he scratches stuff that he's not supposed to scratch and thinks he's a winner so we had to look at it several times," she said.

Gronewold, who works as a food manager at a local convenience store, said she's excited to help her family.

"They would really like to get back to Iowa. So I'm going to bring them home," she said. "Hopefully it's going to be a down payment on a house."

Sales in Surprise Package, a $3 scratch game, have ended, but players still have time to claim prizes in it.
