CLIVE, Iowa – A belated holiday gift ended up yielding a big lottery prize for an Iowa City college student last week.
Robert Studley, 25, said he received a "$250,000 Riches" scratch ticket from his parents Jan. 11 and that ticket ended up winning the 57th of 72 prizes of $10,000 available in the game. The winning ticket was purchased at Hy-Vee, 2827 Hamilton Blvd. in Sioux City.
"My parents sent me a holiday card in the mail and (the scratch ticket) just happened to be a winner," Studley told lottery employees the same day as he claimed his prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Studley, a senior at the University of Iowa studying business, said he didn't see the big prize right away.
"I first looked at it and I didn't think I won," he said. "Then I took a second look at it and I saw the $10,000 on there."
Studley, who also works at a local pressure washing and snow removal business, said he plans to save a majority of his winnings.
The $250,000 Riches scratch game is a $20 ticket. More details about how to play this game, and number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery's website, www.ialottery.com.
