Six Months Later, Cedar Rapids Ticket That Won $2 Million Powerball® Prize Remains Unclaimed

Lottery Reminds Players To Double-Check Their Tickets

CLIVE, Iowa – The six-month mark is approaching for a $2 million Powerball prize that was won in Cedar Rapids and the lucky ticket still remains unclaimed.

The $2 million-winning ticket was purchased at the Hawkeye Convenience Store, 2330 Wiley Blvd. SW in Cedar Rapids. The ticket initially matched the first five numbers but missed the Powerball in the July 16 drawing to win a $1 million prize, but the person who bought the ticket also added the Power Play® option to the purchase, which multiplied the prize to $2 million.

While Monday will be the six-month mark for that prize, lottery offices will be closed that day in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, so the lottery is sending out this reminder a few days early.

"We want to remind people to check any tickets they may have," Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said Friday. "This is a life-changing amount of money and we want to award it to the winner or winners."

The winning numbers in the July 16 Powerball drawing were: 11-17-40-50-62 and Powerball 26. The Power Play number was 2. No one matched all six numbers to win that night's $335.5 million jackpot.

Powerball prizes in Iowa expire a year from the date of the drawing in which a prize is won, so about six months remain for the $2 million prize to be claimed. The prize will expire at the close of business on July 17, 2017, if it isn't claimed by then.

The money from unclaimed prizes in Iowa goes into the lottery's prize pools for future games and promotions, so it will be used to pay prizes, just not those prizes that have expired.

Rich noted that the winning ticket must be presented to the lottery for someone to receive the prize. He also said that for security reasons, the lottery does not release the date, time or video of the ticket purchase prior to the prize claim.

Prizes of $2 million must be claimed at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive. If the winner or winners need information before coming forward to claim the prize, they are invited to call the lottery at 515-725-7900.

Players in $2 Powerball choose their first five numbers from a pool of 69, and another number - called the Powerball - from a separate pool of 26. The Power Play option is available for an extra $1 per play.

Since getting its start in April 1992 in 15 states with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million, Powerball has grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today Powerball is played by 47 lotteries across the country with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at 515-725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
