CLIVE, Iowa - A last-minute decision to buy a scratch ticket last week paid off in a big way for a Burlington man.

Vinton "V.J." Koett claimed the seventh of 10 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's Frogger scratch game.

Koett said he stopped Friday at Westland Fast Break, 1108 W. Agency Road in West Burlington and decided to buy some scratch tickets. He said he enjoys playing the Frogger scratch game, but he first opted to try two new scratch games because he's had a recent string of bad luck playing Frogger.

"Just before I left I said to myself and the cashier, 'That's it; Give me the Frogger,'" Koett told lottery employees Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

The 53-year-old said he knew that he'd won right away, but he had a tough time believing it was real until he received his prize check from the lottery.

"We've been waiting all weekend for the house to burn down with the ticket in it - everything else like that," Koett said jokingly.

Koett, who owns a food truck business with his wife, Pam, said he plans to invest a majority of his winnings into his business, which is called Smokey V's.

"This saves our business," he said.
