Players Will Soon Have Multiplier Option in Hot Lotto Game

DES MOINES - The New Year will bring a new prize option to the Hot Lotto game. Lottery players will be able to triple their prizes with the new Hot Lotto Sizzler!

Beginning Jan. 3, players will be able to add the Hot Lotto Sizzler to their regular Hot Lotto purchase for an extra $1 per play. The Hot Lotto Sizzler can triple any Hot Lotto prize except the jackpot.

“Our players really enjoy the Power Play option offered in Powerball. We took the same concept and added it to Hot Lotto,” said Iowa Lottery Acting CEO Ken Brickman. “The only difference is the Hot Lotto Sizzler will always triple prizes other than the jackpot, while the Power Play option multiplies prizes from two to five times with the spin of the Power Play wheel.”

With the Hot Lotto Sizzler, prizes will be tripled (except for the jackpot):

For example, if a player matches the first five numbers and misses the Hot Ball, then the usual Hot Lotto prize is $10,000. If the player adds the Hot Lotto Sizzler to that play, the prize will be multiplied to $30,000.

The Hot Lotto Sizzler begins sales Jan. 3. The first Hot Lotto drawing where players can triple their prizes with the Hot Lotto Sizzler will be Jan. 5.

Hot Lotto, which began in 2002, is currently played in Iowa, as well as the District of Columbia, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and West Virginia.

Hot Lotto drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday. Players pick five numbers from 1 to 39 and one Hot Ball from 1 to 19. Overall odds of winning a prize in the game are about 1 in 16. Hot Lotto jackpots start at $1 million and continue to grow until someone wins.

Since the Iowa Lottery's inception in 1985, more than $2 billion has been awarded in prizes and nearly $1.1 billion has been raised for state programs.
