Mary Nicol Wins Top Prize in 'Make My Year™' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Falls woman said she had a feeling to buy a lottery ticket while grocery shopping and ended up winning a $100,000 top prize.
"I just went to the grocery store and I'm thinking, 'Oh this is my lucky day, I should get a lottery ticket,'" Mary Nicol said.
Nicol, 60, said she scanned the selection of instant-scratch tickets Feb. 17 at Hy-Vee, 6301 University Ave. in Cedar Falls and decided to buy a "Make My Year" ticket.
"I saw the 'Make My Year' ticket," she said. "I thought, 'Oh, yes just make my year. This is my lucky day!'"
Nicol claimed the second of six top prizes of $100,000 available in the "Make My Year" scratch game. She claimed her prize Wednesday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Nicol said she forgot about her ticket and didn't scratch it until several days later. When she discovered she had won a $100,000 top prize, she said she held onto it.
"I carried it with me again for a few days because I couldn't believe it," she said. "I was like, 'Did I scratch that right? Is this correct?' So I had to go confirm it with my adult son."
Nicol said her lottery winnings will be used for her business - Cedar Valley Reiki Center in Cedar Falls.
The lottery's Make My Year game is part of a series of games that have a similar look, feel and gameplay, but vary in size, cost and prizes offered. The price point and top prize increase with the length of time indicated in the game's name. For example, players can win up to $50,000 playing the $5 Make My Month™ game, but can win up to $100,000 playing the $10 Make My Year game. A $1 Make My Day™ ticket and a $2 Make My Week™ ticket are part of the same series of games. Players scratch the "stars" in the playing area on each ticket and match game symbols to win prizes.
Four top prizes of $100,000 are still up for grabs in Make My Year, as well as five prizes of $10,000, 199 prizes of $1,000 and thousands of prizes of $300 and $100.Return to top↑
