DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids man won the ninth out of 13 top prizes of $10,000 playing the lottery's "Boggle™" instant-scratch game.
Michael Devlin, 54, said it all started as he was helping out his daughter by replacing her windshield wipers. While he was at the Hawkeye Convenience Store, 250 16th Ave. in Cedar Rapids, he went ahead and topped off her car's gas tank and picked up a few scratch tickets for himself.
"So I thought, 'Well, I'll scratch one of these things off and see what happens,'" Devlin said. "I did and I thought, 'Well, I won $10.'"
Devlin took a second look and got quite a shock.
"There's more zeros there. I won $10,000!" Devlin said.
Devlin then went home to share the good news with his wife, Diane.
"Went home about three blocks away and I'm out in the street just screaming," Devlin laughed. "The wife says, 'What in the heck is the matter with you?'"
He told Diane the news and then woke up his children and let them in on the good news, too.
Devlin, who is an iron worker at ADM Dry Grind in Cedar Rapids, claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Devlin said he's got a pretty good idea where the winnings will go.
"It worked out good. Little girl just went to college and I told her I'd help her out," Devlin said.
Devlin said he may also take the family on a little vacation, too.
