Hear Amber tell her story.
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines woman said she decided to give a new lottery instant-scratch game a try and walked away with one of its top prizes of $10,000.
"It's something that you just didn't think was actually going to happen, even though I was just talking about it last night," Amber Duff said as she claimed her prize Wednesday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. "I was like, 'Yeah, what if I buy one of those tickets and win $10,000?' That's what I told my mom."
Duff, 36, won the first of 10 top prizes of $10,000 available in the "Casino Royale" scratch game that just hit the market March 6. Duff said she had purchased just a few tickets in the game when she won big.
"Well, I like slot machines, anything that deals with that," she said. "And I was like, 'Maybe I should get a Roulette ticket and see how that works out.'"
Casino Royale is a $2 scratch game with a Roulette theme. Players win a prize by matching any of "your numbers" to the "Roulette numbers" or finding a "coin" symbol in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.
Duff bought her winning ticket at Dahl's, 3400 E. 33rd St. in Des Moines.
She said there is a new computer in her future to replace her old one, which just burned out.
"I'm going to buy a new laptop," she said. "That's what I'm going to do and put the rest in the bank."
Nine top prizes of $10,000 are still up for grabs in Casino Royale along with 90 prizes of $500 and more than 650 prizes of $100.
"You see people on TV and you're like, 'Man, I wish that could be me. I wish I could win the lottery.' Now I can actually say that," Duff said. "And I have proof - I have a picture of me holding the check that I won!"
