Grimes Woman Buys Scratch Ticket Along With Groceries, Wins $30,000 Prize

Carrie Benson Wins Top Prize Playing the 'Gold Miner' Scratch Game

Carrie Benson   Hear Carrie tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Grimes woman said she decided to buy an instant-scratch ticket during a recent grocery trip and the decision paid off.

Carrie Benson said she purchased a "Gold Miner" scratch ticket Wednesday at Hy-Vee, 2540 E. Euclid Ave. in Des Moines and ended up winning the ninth of 12 top prizes of $30,000 available in the game.

Benson, 35, said she scratched her ticket later that day and couldn't believe what she saw.

"I was sitting on the couch just scratching away and I just really didn't believe it at first," Benson told lottery employees as she claimed her prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.

She said she took her ticket to her fiancé Joe, who was cooking dinner, to double-check.

"I calmly took it to him and said, 'Will you look at this?'" she said. "Because I was sure I was reading it wrong."

Once her fiancé confirmed it was a $30,000-winning ticket, Benson said they both started to celebrate.

"We just kind of looked at each other," she said. "I think we had to go outside away from the kids and scream a little bit."

Benson, who works in the transplant department at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, said her lottery winnings will be used as a down payment on a new home.

Gold Miner is a $3 scratch game. Players reveal the 22 'your symbols' and then scratch all the matching symbols in the five games on each ticket. If a player matches all the symbols on any one horizontal line in any game, they win the corresponding prize for that line. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.84.

Three top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Gold Miner, as well as four prizes of $2,500, 11 prizes of $1,000, 18 prizes of $500, 50 prizes of $200 and 55 prizes of $100.
