Alan Henricks Wins Top Prize Playing the "Gemstone 10s" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque man received an instant-scratch ticket as a birthday present from his daughter and ended up winning a $100,000 top prize.
Alan Henricks, 74, said he scratched off his "Gemstone 10s" ticket on his birthday and couldn't believe what he saw.
"I scratched it and it was $100,000. I about fell off my chair," he said.
Henricks claimed the 17th of 24 top prizes of $100,000 available in the Gemstones 10 game. He claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. The winning ticket was purchased at Kwik Star, 102 David St. in Maquoketa.
Henricks said he passed his winning ticket to his wife, Verle, to have her double-check it.
"She looked at it and her mouth kind of dropped open and she looked at it again," he said. "She said, 'You must be reading it wrong.'"
Henricks said he was waiting until he received his prize before he shared his good news with family and friends. He said his daughter doesn't even know that she bought him a $100,000-winning ticket, but he said he plans to tell her this weekend when she comes to visit.
"She's going to throw her arms around me and say, 'Wow!'" he said.
Henricks, who is retired, said he doesn't have a plan for his winnings yet.
"We'll probably stick to daily life the way it's always been," he said.
Gemstone 10s is a $10 scratch game. Players scratch the "gems" in the prize column play area. If they reveal a "10" symbol, they win the prize shown for that symbol. If they reveal a "crown" symbol, they win $100. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 2.90.
Seven top prizes of $100,000 are still up for grabs in Gemstone 10s, along with eight prizes of $5,000, 178 prizes of $500 and thousands of prizes of $100.Return to top↑
