DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa Falls man said he had to have his winning "Crossword" instant-scratch ticket double-checked before he started to celebrate.

"I scratched it and I couldn't believe it," Brian Mitterer said. "I had to have my Mom check it."

Mitterer claimed the 93rd of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's Crossword game. He claimed his prize Monday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City.

Mitterer said he also had his winning ticket verified at store where he bought it - Hy-Vee, 632 S. Oak St. in Iowa Falls - just to be sure.

"I couldn't believe it, it was kind of hard to believe," he said. "I've never really seen that much money in my life before."

The 25-year old is studying business at Buena Vista University in Iowa Falls. He also works as a shift manager at McDonald's in New Hampton. He said he plans to save a majority of his lottery winnings.

Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.

Three top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (game #756), as well as one prize of $3,000, 55 prizes of $300 and 231 prizes of $100.
