James Roth Wins Top Prize Playing 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dallas County man was pleasantly surprised to find out his winning instant-scratch ticket was worth a lot more than he originally anticipated.
James Roth of De Soto purchased a "Crossword" scratch ticket Friday at Casey's, 1100 Greene St. in De Soto and scratched it off the same day. He said he knew he had a winning ticket and went back to that store to ask the store manager how much money they could pay out for lottery prizes. The store manager then asked Roth if he had a big winner.
"Yeah I've got a big winner," Roth, 60, said. "I said, '$300 worth. I believe I have eight words.'"
The store manager then scanned Roth's ticket to verify it was a winner.
"Next thing I know he's looking at me and he said, 'Jim, you've got bigger problems than what you thought,'" Roth said. "And he said, 'First you need to smile way bigger than what you're smiling now.' He said, 'You don't have an eight-word (winner) - you've got the jackpot $30,000!'"
Roth claimed the 14th of 86 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's newest Crossword game (game #805).
"There were two words that I had the letters already on my ticket that I didn't scratch," he said. "I just missed them."
Roth claimed his prize Monday at lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
"I didn't think it would ever be me, but I was always saying to myself, 'Well, somebody wins all the time. I'm buying the ticket, this could be a winner,'" he said.
Roth, who is retired, said his plans to save his lottery winnings.
