Southeast Iowa Man Tries His Luck On New Scratch Game, Wins $30,000 Prize

Roger Reuther Wins Top Prize in 'X-Treme Winnings' Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - A southeast Iowa man said he recently purchased an instant-scratch ticket with his coffee at a Fort Madison convenience store and the decision paid off.

Roger Reuther of Fort Madison said he debated which scratch ticket to buy on April 2, and ended up purchasing the "X-Treme Winnings" game at RS Petroleum, 2236 Avenue L in Fort Madison.

"I said, 'Ah, give me this one here, I'll try my luck on it,'" Reuther, 66, said.

Reuther scratched off his ticket the same day and ended up winning the sixth of eight top prizes of $30,000 available in the "X-Treme Winnings" game. He claimed his prize Thursday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

He said he had his ticket verified at another Fort Madison lottery retailer before he started to celebrate.

Once his ticket was verified, Reuther said he called his wife of 40 years, Pam, but she didn't believe him right away.

"I showed it to her, but she probably didn't know what it meant or anything," he said.

Reuther, who is semi-retired, said his lottery winnings will be used to purchase a newer vehicle and to make some home renovations.

X-Treme Winnings is a $3 scratch game. Players scratch the "X-Numbers," then scratch all the numbers in each game that exactly match any of the "X-Numbers." If a player matches all of the numbers in any game, he/she wins the prize for that game. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.76.

Two top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in X-Treme Winnings, as well as 15 prizes of $1,000, 11 prizes of $500 and hundreds of prizes between $100 and $200.
