Jim Calloway Wins Top Prize in New 'Super Crossword' Scratch Game

Jim Calloway   Hear Jim tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa City man said he scratched off his "Super Crossword" ticket and thought he made a mistake.

Jim Calloway, 46, said he was half-asleep when he scratched off his ticket and learned he won the second of 37 top prizes of $50,000 available in the game.

"I thought I made a mistake so I kept checking it," he said. "I'm like, 'Wait a minute.' So I counted the words and I got 10 words and I'm like, 'No way! I screwed up, there's just no way!'"

Calloway, who is a taxi cab driver in Iowa City, said he took his winning ticket back to the store where he purchased it at - Iowa City Pit Stop, 300 Kirkwood Ave. in Iowa City - to double-check. One of Calloway's friends was working at that time and scanned his ticket for him.

"He's like, 'Are you kidding me?'" Calloway told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. "And I'm like, 'I guess not. I'm going to need that back.'"

Calloway said he sometimes plays scratch tickets as a way to pass the time while waiting for customers in his cab. He said he never expected to win big.

"It was a pleasant surprise," he said. "I'm pretty happy about it. This never happens to me."

Calloway said his lottery winnings will be used to pay bills. He also plans to share some of his winnings with his siblings.
