Pam Paardekooper Wins Top Prize in Newest 'Super Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dallas County woman wanted to be sure she won a $50,000 lottery prize before she started to celebrate.
Pam Paardekooper of Redfield said she had her children double-check her "Super Crossword" ticket. She ended up winning the third of 37 top prizes of $50,000 available in the game.
"Woke them up, made them go through it a million times," Paardekooper said. "Checked it over and over and over and finally took it up (to the store) and had it checked. And yes, we're all good."
Even when she was at the store verifying her winning ticket, Paardekooper said she tried to keep her emotions in check.
"I checked it on the self-checker, just so I wouldn't freak out in front of everybody," Paardekooper told lottery employees as she claimed her prize Friday at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
Paardekooper, a self-employed bookkeeper for local farmers, said she purchased her winning ticket April 10 at Casey's, 425 Second St. in Redfield, and scratched it off the next morning.
"I wasn't even paying attention until I thought, 'Oh, I think I have five or six words,'" she said. "And then when I counted up 10 I was like, 'Oh, I won $1,000' and then it's like, 'Oh, I won the whole thing!'"
Paardekooper said her lottery winnings will be used towards a previously scheduled trip to Montana this summer to meet her new, yet to be born, identical twin grandchildren.
Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.
Thirty-four top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Super Crossword, as well as 70 prizes of $5,000, 108 prizes of $500 and 970 prizes of $100.Return to top↑
