Carla Kummer Wins Top Prize in 'Mike's Picks' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A recent trip to the grocery store was a life-changing event for an Army Reserve soldier from Charles City.
Carla Kummer said she went to Hy-Vee, 901 Kelly St. in Charles City, on April 12 for some supplies and decided to purchase a "Mike's Picks" scratch ticket as well. That decision paid off for Kummer, as she ended up winning the third of nine top prizes of $50,000 available in the game.
"I never usually scratch my tickets in the store," she said. "For some reason instead of putting it in my purse, I sat it down and scratched it, and then I'm like, 'Oh my!'"
Kummer said she wasn't feeling the best and was just going to get what she needed at the store and head home.
"I just thought, 'Well, I'll just buy me a lottery ticket and go home,'" she said. "But it didn't work out that way because I felt so much better after I scratched that ticket."
Kummer, 48, said she is preparing for upcoming military work in the Dominican Republic and her lottery win will help her get her finances in order.
"I've been living paycheck to paycheck lately," Kummer told lottery employees as she claimed her prize Monday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City.
Kummer claims to be one of the oldest women currently serving in the Army Reserves and told lottery employees that when she joined the military in 2008, it was a historical milestone.
"I'm the oldest woman in the US to ever join the military with no prior service," she said.
Mike's Picks is a $5 scratch game. Tickets in the game feature expert collectibles picker and television personality Mike Wolfe, and the rooster-emblazoned logo from his Antique Archaeology stores in Nashville, Tenn. and LeClaire. Lottery players try to win a prize by matching any of "Your Numbers" to any "Mike's Winning Picks" numbers in the play area on each ticket. Those who find a rooster symbol win double the prize shown. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.74.
Six top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Mike's Picks as well as 100 prizes of $1,000, 128 prizes of $200 and 238 prizes of $100.
Those who don't win a cash prize can enter their nonwinning tickets from the game into the Mike's Picks promotion for a chance to win a trip to Nashville or LeClaire and products from Iowa companies.
To enter the Play It Again® promotion, Iowa Lottery players must join or already be members of the lottery's free VIP Club. Entries can be made through noon on June 30 and the promotion's drawings are set for July 1.Return to top↑
