Tracy Cole Wins $30,000 Top Prize Playing 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman purchased a pair of instant-scratch tickets during a break at work and ended up winning a big lottery prize.
Tracy Cole, 58, said she bought two "Crossword" tickets April 12 at the Fareway store where she works - 4220 16th Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids - and scratched them off during a break. She ended up winning the 18th of 86 top prizes of $30,000 available in the game.
"I scratched the one ahead of it and that was a $3 winner and I thought to myself, 'Oh jeez, this next one is going to be a loser,'" Cole told lottery employees as she claimed her prize April 15 at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Cole verified her ticket using the store's lottery terminal and then called her husband, Gary.
"(Gary said,) 'You guys are pranking me,'" she said. "And I said, 'No, honey! Would you please come up here and get it and put it away for me?'"
Cole said news of her big lottery win traveled quickly throughout the grocery store.
"That went around the whole store like fire," she said.
Cole said her lottery winnings will be saved for retirement.
