Cedar Falls Friends Split $10,000 Powerball® Prize

Sharon Regenold and Ann Barnard Win Big Prize in April 16 Drawing

Sharon Regenold and Ann Barnard   Hear Sharon & Ann tell their story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A spur-of-the-moment Powerball purchase paid off for two friends from Cedar Falls.

Sharon Regenold, 52, joined Ann Barnard, 52, at her son's tennis match on April 16 in Waterloo. During the match, Regenold and Barnard said they started to become cold and walked to a nearby convenience store - Kwik Star, 324 Fletcher Ave. in Waterloo - to get some coffee. While they were there, they decided to buy a couple of Powerball tickets as well, and ended up winning a $10,000 prize.

"It was just kind of a fluke," Regenold said. "We were just at this store mostly just to get some coffee."

Regenold and Barnard matched four white balls and the Powerball in the April 16 drawing to win a $10,000 prize. Regenold and Barnard are good friends and are splitting the prize.

"I think it's most fun when it's shared," Regenold told lottery employees as she and Barnard claimed their prize April 22 at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. "It was more fun, just the two of us winning and being there together and seeing it at the same time and running and telling everybody else."

The winning numbers in that night's $110 million Powerball drawing were: 34-39-42-44-59 and Powerball 8. The Power Play® number drawn was 3. Wednesday's jackpot is an estimated $50 million.

Regenold said they found out they won April 17 after seeing the winning numbers in a local newspaper. Once they double-checked their winning ticket on the Iowa Lottery's website, the two friends said they started sharing their good news with everyone.

"Mostly everybody's just been happy for us," Regenold said. "Then everybody's been wanting us to take them to lunch."

Regenold said both she and Barnard are still discussing what to do with their lottery winnings.

"We haven't thought about that," she said. "We've been so caught up in the celebration that we haven't thought about what to do with it."

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
