Pattie Sander Wins in April 23 Powerball Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - An eastern Iowa woman has claimed a large lottery prize.

Pattie Sander, 51, of De Witt won $200,000 in the April 23 Powerball® drawing. She purchased the winning ticket at Mac's Express, 1101 11th St. in De Witt and claimed her prize at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

When Sander had her ticket checked, she was surprised to learn how much she'd won! So surprised, that she got a little shaky.

“I was having trouble writing the check for the gas I bought,” she said.

After she discovered she was a big winner, Sander told her father and her husband about the win. Her husband told everyone where he works. The owner of the store where Sander purchased the winning ticket called Sander's boss at the daycare where she works to tell her boss the good news. Her boss announced the news to her coworkers over the intercom!

“So then everyone was screaming and they woke all the kids up,” Sander recalled.

The winning Powerball numbers for the April 23 drawing were: 11-20-21-22-39. The Powerball was 1. The Power Play® multiplier was 10.

If Sander had played the Power Play option, she would have won $2 million! But she's pretty happy with her prize, nonetheless.

“I'm happy to win anything,” she said.

Sander said she will use her winnings to pay bills and renovate her home.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play.

Just before the Powerball numbers are drawn, the Power Play wheel is spun. Slots on the wheel list the numbers 2 through 5, indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.

For a limited time, one of the four “5's” on the Power Play wheel has been replaced by a “10.” That means Iowa Lottery players can multiply any prize they win by 10 times! For example, if a player wins a $100 prize and the Power Play number is “10,” that player would win $1,000. A $200,000 prize with a Power Play of “10” would be multiplied to $2 million! Jackpot prizes are not eligible for this promotion.

The Power Play 10X promotion began March 30 and runs through April 30. The promotion was to have run for nine drawings if the “10” wasn't hit or until the “10” on the Power Play wheel is hit at least once. The “10” has been hit twice so far during this year's promotion.

Winning numbers may be checked by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Winning numbers may also be checked through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633, at the lottery Web site at www.ialottery.com or with lottery retail outlets.

Since the Iowa Lottery's inception in 1985, more than $2.1 billion has been awarded in prizes and more than $1.1 billion has been raised for state programs.
