DES MOINES, Iowa - A northern Iowa woman will always remember her recent birthday.

Keri Johnston of New Hartford bought a "Super Crossword" instant-scratch ticket as a birthday present to herself and ended up winning the fifth of 37 top prizes of $50,000 available in the game.

Johnston purchased her winning ticket Thursday at Jensen's Bridgeway Convenience Store, 202 W. Traer St. in Greene, just hours before her 30th birthday on Friday.

"Just stopped and grabbed a ticket, test my luck before my birthday and ended up winning $50,000," Johnston told lottery employees as she claimed her prize Friday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City.

Johnston said she checked her winning ticket numerous times before she believed she had won a big prize.

"Scratched it a couple of hours before my birthday and it took about that long to sink in before I could realize that this was real," she said.

Johnston showed her winning ticket to her boyfriend, Wyatt Jacobs, and he started "shaking," she said.

"We didn't want to get too worked up until we checked it," she said.

Johnston said her winnings will be used to pay bills and fix up her vehicle.

Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.

Thirty-two top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Super Crossword, as well as 64 prizes of $5,000, 102 prizes of $500 and 903 prizes of $100.
