Coffee With Mom Pays Off For Cedar Rapids Man

James Heeren Wins $50,000 Top Prize In 'Super Crossword' Scratch Game

James Heeren   Hear James tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids man said he didn't realize he had won a $50,000 top prize until he started to double-check his "Super Crossword" instant-scratch ticket.

"I knew I had nine (words)," said James Heeren, 70. "I looked it over again and then I found one more. So then I knew I had 10."

Heeren said he and his siblings take their mother out for coffee every Saturday morning at Triple C 1-Stop, 301 Third St. NW in Hopkinton. On Saturday, Heeren purchased a Super Crossword scratch ticket with his coffee and ended up winning the sixth of 37 top prizes of $50,000 available in the game.

"I was in total shock. I couldn't believe I got it," Heeren told lottery employees Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Heeren had his sister double-check his winning ticket and he also had his ticket verified by the store's lottery terminal before he started to celebrate.

"Everybody was excited and lot of high-fives," he said.

Heeren said his lottery winnings will be used for retirement.
