Jennifer Kolsrud Wins Top Prize Playing 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A spur-of-the-moment decision to buy an instant-scratch ticket paid off for a northeast Iowa woman.
Jennifer Kolsrud of Garnavillo claimed the 23rd of 86 top prizes of $30,000 available in the "Crossword" scratch game.
Kolsrud, 23, said she decided to purchase a Crossword scratch ticket while grocery shopping Friday and stopped at Kwik Star, 125 Main St. in McGregor.
Kolsrud said she scratched off her ticket when she got home and knew that she had a won a big prize. However she initially thought that she had won just $300, not a $30,000 top prize.
"I thought I missed a letter and its like, 'Oh that's nine words,'" Kolsrud told lottery employees Monday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. "Then I was looking through it one more time and then I found another one and I was in shock."
Kolsrud, who works as a nurse at a care center, took her ticket back to the store to have it verified before she started to celebrate.
"I'm like, 'Just humor me. Don't let me think I'm not crazy,'" she said. "Their eyes just got huge."
When her winning ticket was verified, Kolsrud said she was so happy she started crying and immediately shared her good news with her mother and sister.
"My Mom started jumping up and down and screaming, almost crying," she said.
Kolsrud and her husband, Austin, said the lottery winnings will be used to pay for scheduled repairs to their home.
