DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque woman decided to purchase an instant-scratch ticket with her gasoline and the decision paid off.

Katherine Nesteby, 29, filled up her vehicle with gas Wednesday at Kwik Star, 2685 Dodge St. in Dubuque and purchased a "Crossword" scratch ticket as well. She ended up winning the 25th of 86 top prizes of $30,000 available in the game.

Nesteby said she scratched off her ticket before she went to work at JCPenney, and couldn't believe what she saw.

"I didn't believe it until I went over to the grocery store to have it scanned," Nesteby told lottery employees Wednesday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

After her winning ticket was verified, Nesteby said she didn't know how to react.

"I was still in shock," she said. "I didn't know what to say. I didn't know what to do."

Nesteby shared her good news with her husband, Kyle, and other family members, but they all thought she was joking.

"Nobody believed me until I actually sent the picture that said that it was a winner," she said.

Nesteby hasn't decided how she'll spend her winnings.

Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.

Sixty-one top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (game #805), as well as 91 prizes of $3,000 and thousands of prizes of $300 and $100.
