Dennis Shannon Wins Two Big Prizes in June 4 Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A western Iowa man's forgetfulness paid off.
Dennis Shannon of Missouri Valley won $10,000 on two separate Powerball tickets in the June 4 drawing, for a total of $20,000. He said he has a set of numbers he plays for each Powerball drawing and he purchased a ticket May 31 for the June 4 drawing, but misplaced it, so he purchased another ticket June 2.
"It's unusual because I bought an extra ticket and I didn't realize I bought it because I lost my other tickets and I couldn't find them," Shannon said. "So I just bought an extra ticket. I didn't realize it until after I bought it so it's like, 'Oh well.'"
Both of Shannon's winning tickets were purchased at Kum & Go, 717 E. Erie St. in Missouri Valley and each ticket ended up matching four white balls and the Powerball in the June 4 drawing to win a pair of $10,000 prizes.
The winning numbers in that night's $196 million Powerball drawing were: 1-7-10-22-49 and Powerball 24. The Power Play® number drawn was 3. The Powerball jackpot has been climbing since April 26 and has grown to an estimated $257 million for Wednesday's drawing.
Shannon, who works at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, said he checked his winning tickets Thursday when he filled up with gasoline at Kum & Go in Missouri Valley and was in disbelief.
"I checked it about three times, thought something was probably wrong," Shannon told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Thursday at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.
The 55-year-old said he has been playing the same numbers for more than 20 years, but previously hadn't won more than $600 in a single drawing. The numbers really don't have any significance, Shannon said.
"Just a bunch of numbers I put in a hat when the lottery started and that's all it was," he said.
Shannon said his lottery winnings will be used to pay bills.
