Iowa City Man Misses Powerball® Jackpot By One Number

Jeff Carter Wins $10,000 Prize in June 4 Drawing

Jeff Carter   Hear Jeff tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa City man said something unusual happened last week when he checked his Powerball ticket on the lottery's website.

"I always check my numbers in the morning and usually go, 'Huh I got one,'" said Jeff Carter. "And (Thursday) morning I got up and looked online and I'm like, 'Hmm, that's odd. There's four numbers and the Powerball.'"

Carter matched four white balls and the Powerball in the June 4 drawing to win a $10,000 prize. He purchased his winning ticket at Hartig Drug Company, 701 Mormon Trek Blvd. in Iowa City.

The winning numbers in that night's $196 million Powerball drawing were: 1-7-10-22-49 and Powerball 24. The Power Play® number drawn was 3. The Powerball jackpot has been climbing since April 26 and has grown to an estimated $257 million for Wednesday's drawing.

Carter said he double-checked his Powerball numbers in a local newspaper and was confident that his ticket was a big winner.

"I was really shocked when I looked at that," Carter told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Thursday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. "And then of course you're thinking, 'Why couldn't that other number be there?'"

The 65-year-old retiree said he is a regular Powerball player, but this is the first time he has won a big lottery prize.

"This is the first time I've won over four bucks," he said.

Carter and his wife, Marty, said the lottery winnings will be used to buy a new roof for their house and to help pay for an upcoming trip to the Four Corners Region in the western United States.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
