Robert Cooper Wins $10,000 Top Prize in 'Make My Week™' Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines man credits his $10,000 lottery win to some words of encouragement he received last week when he purchased scratch tickets.

Robert Cooper claimed the seventh of eight top prizes of $10,000 available in the "Make My Week" scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket Friday at Scott's Shoppe, 542 Fifth St. in West Des Moines. As he was leaving the store, Cooper said the store owner wished him good luck.

"He said, 'You're going to win that $10,000-winner here pretty soon,'" Cooper told lottery employees Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. "I said, 'Oh yeah, sure.' So I went home and believe it or not there was the $10,000 winner."

Cooper, who is retired, said he has had some recent good luck playing the Make My Week game, but never expected to win one of the game's top prizes.

"I was just sitting at home and scratching tickets and the winner came up - $10,000," he said. "I had to look at it seven or eight times to make sure."

Cooper said he plans to save a majority of his lottery winnings.

The lottery's Make My Week game is part of a series of games that have a similar look, feel and gameplay, but vary in size, cost and prizes offered. The price point and top prize increase with the length of time indicated in the game's name. For example, players can win up to $10,000 playing the $2 Make My Week game, but can win up to $100,000 playing the $10 Make My Year™ game. A $1 Make My Day™ ticket and a $5 Make My Month™ ticket are part of the same series of games. Players scratch the "stars" in the playing area on each ticket and match game symbols to win prizes.

One top prize of $10,000 is still up for grabs in Make My Week, as well as 67 prizes of $300 and 167 prizes of $150.
