Richard Patterson Won Big With 10X Multiplier In June 12
Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa – An Illinois man won a $100,000 prize playing
Powerball with the Power Play during a limited-time promotion
that increased the multiplier option.
Richard Patterson Sr. of Savanna, Ill., matched four numbers and
the Powerball in the June 12 drawing. Because he purchased the
Power Play, he multiplied his $10,000 prize by 10 to win
$100,000!
Patterson said he always chooses the Power Play because it gives
him the chance to win more, but he wasn't aware of the lottery's
special 10X promotion when he purchased the ticket at the Hop N
Shop, 416 Broad St. in Sabula.
The Powerball 10X Promotion began with the drawing on May 1 and
continued through June 12. Here's how the 10X feature worked:
The Power Play option normally gives Powerball players the
chance to multiply their non-jackpot Powerball prizes by 2, 3, 4
or 5 times for an additional $1 per play. At the beginning of
each Powerball drawing, an animated spinner presents that
night's multiplier number.
During the promotion, one of the 5X multipliers in the Power
Play feature was replaced with a 10X. When the 10X was selected
in the June 12 drawing, that meant prizes with the Power Play
option were multiplied 10 times. (Jackpot prizes are not
eligible for the Power Play.)
The winning numbers on June 12 were: 9-12-13-35-38 and Powerball
30. The Power Play® multiplier was 10.
Patterson said that each week he plays the same Powerball
numbers, which are made up of his and his wife's birthdays.
The 79-year-old returned to the Hop N Shop to have his tickets
checked, but had no idea he had won something big. The clerk who
checked his ticket was flustered after putting the ticket
through the lotto terminal and learning Patterson had won a big
prize. Patterson also asked to buy some more Powerball plays.
"He got so excited he only gave me the one draw on two tickets
instead of two draws – so he gave me two single ones!" Patterson
said.
What was Patterson's reaction to the win?
"I fell over!" he joked.
Patterson said his wife, Jan, didn't believe him when he told
her the news.
"She said, 'Don't kid like that,'" he said.
Patterson claimed his prize June 15 at Iowa Lottery headquarters
in Des Moines.
Patterson, who is retired, said he will probably fix up his
vehicle with some of his winnings. He added that it's possible
he'll be moving soon, so the money could come in handy to help
with expenses for that as well.
