Daryl Tigges Wins Top Prize in Pinball Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marshalltown man kept quite a secret until he got to the Iowa Lottery on Thursday: He'd won the top prize of $50,000 in the “Pinball” game!

“I haven't told anyone!” Daryl Tigges said with a laugh as he claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Des Moines.

Tigges said he played his winning ticket late at night and initially was in disbelief at what he saw.

“I couldn't believe it, but it was evident I'd won $50,000,” he said. “And I just kind of stood there. I didn't tell anyone or whoop or holler or anything. I just went outside. It was late at night so I didn't get much sleep afterwards, thinking about it!”

Tigges purchased his winning ticket at the Git-N-Go convenience store, 3302 S. Center St. in Marshalltown.

Pinball is a $5 double-play game with an instant-scratch game on the front and a pull-tab game on the back. There are three play areas. The overall odds of winning in the game are about 1 in 3.85.

Tigges said he doesn't have specific plans for his winnings, but the money will help him make plans with more surety.

“You know, I can count on doing things more so when I want to do them,” he said.

Tigges claimed the game's fifth top prize. Five additional top prizes of $50,000 have yet to be claimed in the game, along with more than 50 prizes of $1,000, about 160 prizes of $250 and more than 500 prizes of $100.

Since the Iowa Lottery's inception in 1985, more than $2.2 billion has been awarded in prizes and more than $1.1 billion has been raised for state programs.
