Sharon Duffey
Wins in Saturday Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A central Iowa woman said she got a surprise early in the morning when
she checked her Powerball ticket and realized she'd won a $200,000 prize.
Sharon Duffey of Adel won a $200,000 prize in Saturday's Powerball drawing. Duffey, who
is retired, said she had logged onto the Iowa Lottery Web site early Tuesday to check her Powerball
ticket. She said that at first, she thought she'd matched just three numbers, but looked again
and realized that the winning numbers kept going!
Duffey said she was so excited, she had her husband hold the ticket while she read the
numbers to him aloud to double-check them. After realizing she'd won a big prize, she called
her son at work and told him to cancel his plans for lunch so they could meet him. She said she
didn't tell him why, and planned to surprise him with the news.
Duffey purchased her ticket at Casey's, 802 Greene St. in Adel. She claimed her prize
Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Des Moines.
Her ticket was just one number away from winning a share of Saturday's $206.9 million
jackpot. Duffey ended up matched the first five numbers but missed the Powerball to win a
$200,000 prize. Saturday's winning numbers were: 13-24-29-40-52 and Powerball 29. The
PowerPlay number was 4. Saturday's jackpot was won by a lottery player who purchased a
Powerball ticket in New Mexico.
If Duffey had chosen to play the Power Play®, she would have won $800,000.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The
cost is $1 per play.
Just before the Powerball numbers are drawn, the Power Play wheel is spun. Slots on the wheel
list the numbers 2 through 5, indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if
that number is drawn.
Winning numbers may be checked by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. Winning numbers may also be checked through the winning numbers' hot line at
(515) 323-4633, at the lottery Web site at www.ialottery.com or with lottery retail outlets.
Since the Iowa Lottery's inception in 1985, more than $2.2
billion has been awarded in prizes and more than $1.1 billion
has been raised for state programs.
