Oskaloosa Man's Lottery Ticket Worth More Than He Expected

Corey Lathram-Skillman Wins $21,000 Top Prize In 'Deluxe 7-11-21®' Scratch Game

Corey Lathram-Skillman   Hear Corey tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Oskaloosa man knew he had a winning Iowa Lottery instant-scratch ticket, but he wasn't expecting the convenience store clerk who checked his ticket to say he had won a $21,000 top prize.

"I just scratched off the back three (numbers in the prize area), so I saw three zeroes and then I scratched off the one and I'm like, 'Oh, I won $1,000,'" Corey Lathram-Skillman, 22, said. "So I brought it inside and then the guy said I won $21,000 instead."

Lathram-Skillman, who is studying sports administration at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, claimed the 12th of 19 top prizes of $21,000 available in the lottery's "Deluxe 7-11-21®" game.

Lathram-Skillman claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He purchased his winning ticket Thursday at Jiffy, 315 A Ave E. in Oskaloosa.

Lathram-Skillman said he had no intentions of buying lottery tickets that day, but his neighbor asked for a ride to the gas station and Lathram-Skillman decided to buy a couple of scratch tickets while he was there.

"It turned out to be a great decision," he said.

Lathram-Skillman said he plans to save a majority of his winnings for his son, who is eight months old.

"I wish I could go out and spend all the money, but I've got responsibilities to take care of," he said.

Deluxe 7-11-21® is a $5 scratch game. If the total of "your numbers" in any one of the nine games in the play area on each ticket equals 7 or 11, the player wins the prize shown for that game. If the total of "your numbers" for any one game equals 21, the player wins triple the prize shown for that game. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.72.

Seven top prizes of $21,000 are still up for grabs in Deluxe 7-11-21®, along with 30 prizes of $2,100 and 242 prizes of $210.
