18 Co-Workers At Winterset Manufacturing Plant Split $40,000 Lottery Prize

'Mahle Filter Systems' Claims Prize from Oct. 19 Powerball® Drawing

Jill Beck of Mahle Filter Systems   Hear Jill tell their story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - Eighteen co-workers from a manufacturing plant in Winterset have split a $40,000 Powerball prize that they won with a ticket they pooled their money to buy at a Winterset convenience store.

The group calls itself "Mahle Filter Systems," the name of the Winterset plant where the members all work. Group spokeswoman Jill Beck said each group member contributes $6 a week to buy Powerball tickets for the Wednesday and Saturday drawings.

Beck, of Winterset, claimed the prize on behalf of the group Friday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. Beck works in the finance department at Mahle.

"They wanted the lady who handles the money to go," she said.

Mahle purchased the group's winning ticket Oct. 17 at Casey's, 1021 N. First St. in Winterset for the Oct. 19 Powerball drawing. The winning numbers in the $183 million drawing that day were: 9-33-54-56-57 and Powerball 5.

Beck said she saw the winning Powerball numbers on TV the night of the drawing and had her daughter check the group's ticket.

"My daughter went and grabbed a pencil so she could circle the numbers and she handed it back to me," Beck said. "I looked at it and I said, 'What?'"

The group's ticket matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball to win a $10,000 prize, but because the group had added the Power Play® option to their purchase, the prize multiplied to $40,000.

Beck said she "couldn't believe it" and went to the lottery's website to double-check the winning numbers and see what prize the group had won.

"There it was - $40,000," she said. "I was a bouncing off the walls all night then."

Beck wasn't in possession of the group's ticket the night of the drawing, but she said each group member had a copy of the ticket so that they could check it.

"By the time Sunday afternoon came around, everyone pretty much knew except for one person," she said.

Each member of the group received about $1,555 after taxes. Beck said the group will continue to pool money together to buy Powerball tickets.
