DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marion man wasn't quite sure what he'd won on his "North Pole Bingo" instant-scratch ticket until he had it validated - then he found out he was a top prize-winner of $25,000.
Donald Kroening, 74, said he plays lottery games every once in a while and likes the Bingo games because they take a while to do.
"Thought that I'd won, but wasn't real sure," Kroening said. "And I checked it four or five times."
Kroening took the ticket back to Hy-Vee, 3600 Business Hwy. 151 in Marion, where he purchased the ticket, to have it validated. After he figured out he was indeed a winner, he called a good friend to tell him the news.
"He says, 'You're so lucky!'" Kroening said. "Hopefully now he'll win something like that."
Kroening, who is retired, said he plans to save some of his winnings and use some for the holidays. He claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
