Sioux City Man's 'Luck' Changes, Wins $30,000 Lottery Prize

Jayson Zortman Wins Top Prize Playing the 'Gold Miner' Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Sioux City man said his "luck" finally changed playing his favorite instant-scratch game.

Jayson Zortman won a $30,000 top prize on a "Gold Miner" scratch ticket he purchased earlier this month at Sam's Mini Mart, 711 Gordon Drive in Sioux City.

"I've been playing that game all summer," Zortman, 66, said. "I had some really back luck with it and so on an impulse I just happened to buy that and said to myself, 'That's the last one of these I'm buying.'"

Zortman said he scratched off his ticket at home and knew right away that he had won.

"I did think that I had won, but I didn't know for sure until I took it to the retailer and had them run it through the machine," he said.

Zortman, a retired physician who currently works for Sand Creek Post and Beam in Nebraska, claimed his prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. He claimed the sixth of 12 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Gold Miner game.

Zortman doesn't have any immediate plans for his lottery winnings, but said it's been "a blast" winning a big prize.

"What's going to stick with me is being able to lord it over all the people that told me I was a fool for playing the lottery - you couldn't win because the odds were so high," he said.

Gold Miner is a $3 scratch game. Players reveal the 22 'your symbols' and then scratch all the matching symbols in the five games on each ticket. If a player matches all the symbols on any one horizontal line in any game, they win the corresponding prize for that line. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.84.

Six top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Gold Miner, as well as six prizes of $2,500, 15 prizes of $1,000, 29 prizes of $500, 71 prizes of $200 and 79 prizes of $100.
