Hear Donald tell his story.
DES MOINES, Iowa - A routine night ended with some excitement when a Shelby man discovered he'd won a top prize of $25,000 playing the lottery's "North Pole Bingo" instant-scratch game.
Donald Colligan, 76, said he was just sitting at home when he discovered his prize.
"It shocked me for a minute when the three corners come up, then the fourth one, then the rest of them filled in," Colligan said. "It was real exciting."
Colligan's wife, Joan, was home when he scratched the winning ticket.
"I said, 'Uh, I think I just won $25,000,'" Colligan said. "She said, 'No!'"
Colligan, who is an Army retiree, claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. He said he has not yet made plans for his winnings.
"I think we'll just save it for something else," he said. "You never know what's going to come up!"
Colligan purchased his winning ticket at Taylor Quik Pic, 11 East St. in Shelby.
