Knoxville Man Wins More Than He Originally Thought, Takes Home $30,000 Lottery Prize

Thomas Johnson Wins Big Prize in Dec. 7 Hot Lotto® Drawing

Thomas Johnson   Hear Thomas tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Knoxville man had a convenience store clerk double-check his winning Hot Lotto ticket and found out he won a lot more than he was expecting.

Thomas Johnson said he checked his ticket and originally thought he had won $30.

"I gave it to the lady behind the counter and it came out with this other paper and it is really $30,000!" Johnson said. "(I was) about ready to faint. It was a good deal!"

Johnson matched all five white balls, but missed the Hot Ball in the Dec. 7 drawing to win a $30,000 prize. The winning numbers in the Hot Lotto drawing that night were: 16-24-35-41-45 and Hot Ball 18.

Johnson said he took his ticket home and immediately shared his good news with his wife, Michele.

"She was tickled to death," he said.

Johnson purchased his winning ticket at Knoxville 66, 306 W. Pleasant in Knoxville, and claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.

Johnson said he plans to save his winnings.

There was no jackpot winner in the Dec. 7 drawing. The Hot Lotto jackpot has been growing since Oct. 12 and stands at $1.9 million for Wednesday's drawing. The game now has an all-cash jackpot with withholding taxes paid, meaning that if the advertised jackpot is $1.9 million, the winner will receive a one-time, lump-sum payment for that full amount.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
