Hear Nicholas tell his story.
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Lowden man said he owes his girlfriend a big "thank you" for purchasing the "Best Wishes for a Swell Season" instant-scratch ticket that won him a $10,000 top prize.
Nicholas Lange, 29, said he sent his girlfriend to Cedar Country Store, 2250 US Highway 30 in Lowden to buy a few scratch tickets for them to play as a family.
"I told [my girlfriend] to double-check it because I always enter them in on the website for the VIP Club and she looked at it and she said, 'I think we won $10,000!'" Lange said. "I grabbed the ticket from her, I looked at it and I took it down to the gas station for them to check it."
The retailer validated the ticket and confirmed Lange had won a top prize of $10,000. Lange called his brother to tell him the news.
"He didn't believe me," Lange said.
Lange, who works for the City of Lowden, said he is planning to pay a few bills with his winnings. He claimed his prize Dec. 17 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
