Denison Convenience Store Sells $1 Million-Winning Mega Millions® Ticket

Prize Won In Friday Drawing; Four $1 Million-Winning Tickets Sold In Iowa This Year

DES MOINES, Iowa - A lottery player who bought a Mega Millions ticket at a western Iowa convenience store won a $1 million Mega Millions prize in Friday's drawing.

It is the first $1 million Mega Millions prize won in Iowa since the game's start here in January and it is the fourth $1 million-winning ticket sold in Iowa this year.

"There's that old saying about April showers bringing May flowers, but itís raining millionaires in Iowa right now," Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said Saturday.

The $1 million-winning ticket was sold at Kum & Go, 1109 Fourth Ave. S. in Denison. The ticket originally matched the first five numbers but missed the Mega Ball to win a $250,000 prize. But the player who purchased the ticket also added the Megaplier® option to the winning play, which multiplied the prize to $1 million.

The winning numbers in Friday's $90 million Mega Millions jackpot drawing were: 15-18-39-48-53 and Mega Ball 3. The Megaplier® number was 4.

Players can multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) with the Megaplier up to four times. The cost is $1 per play. No one won the jackpot in Friday's Mega Millions drawing, so the big prize climbs to an estimated $105 million for Tuesday's drawing.

Powerball and Mega Millions are both lotto games with jackpot prizes that have climbed into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Until recently, the games had been sold by separate groups of lotteries, but many states, including Iowa, began selling tickets in both games in January. One of the additional changes made in Iowa at that time gives players an extra hour to buy tickets in Powerball and Mega Millions on the night of the games' drawings. The sales cutoff time on the night of the drawing now is 8:59 p.m.

Rich said it's always exciting to meet Iowa's newest lottery millionaires.

"We're always happy to see big winners here in Iowa," Rich said. "It seems like more and more people are adding the Megaplier option - and it pays off when they win $1 million rather than $250,000 for the extra $1."

The $1 million-winning ticket is the second sold in Denison to win a major Iowa Lottery prize. Don Sporrer of Denison won a $2.7 million Hot Lotto jackpot in the drawing on Christmas Day 2002 with a ticket he purchased at a Denison supermarket.

The three Iowa Lottery players who have claimed $1 million prizes so far in 2010 are:

  • Richard Bauder of Ankeny, who claimed a $1 million prize Jan. 14 in the "Set For Life" instant-scratch game.
  • Sorin Ganea of Dubuque, who also won a $1 million prize in Set For Life. He claimed his prize on Feb. 8.
  • David Lyons of Des Moines, who won a $1 million Powerball prize in the March 31 drawing.

Prizes of $1 million must be claimed at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. Players can claim prizes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. If the winner or winners need information before coming forward to claim the prize, they are invited to call the lottery at 515-725-7900.

Players looking to get in on all the jackpot action also can take advantage of the new "Lotto 12-Pack" promotion. Players can use the promotion to receive a discount for buying tickets all at once in Powerball with Power Play®, Mega Millions with Megaplier® and Hot Lotto® with the Sizzler. Players can choose to buy in to all the games for a week and receive $12 in plays for only $10, or they can bundle plays in the games at a discounted price for two, three or four weeks at a time.
