'Somebody's Got To Win It' As 10X Promo Continues, Jackpot Hits Est. $260 Million
DES MOINES, Iowa - A promotion that gives lottery players the chance to win up to $2 million with the Power Play option in Powerball has been extended just as the game's jackpot has climbed to an estimated $260 million for Wednesday's drawing.
The Powerball 10X Promotion, which began with the drawing on May 1, was scheduled to end after Saturday night's drawing. But, because the multiplier "10" was not selected during the promotion's initial period, the 10X will continue until the multiplier "10" is drawn.
"Our players had been asking us to bring back the Power Play 10X promotion, and it's proven popular again this year," Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said Monday. "This is the fourth time the Iowa Lottery has offered the Power Play 10X promotion, but the first time that the 10X didn't come up during the promotion's initial run."
Here's how the 10X feature works: The Power Play feature normally gives Powerball players the chance to multiply their non-jackpot Powerball prizes by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times for an additional $1 per play. At the beginning of each Powerball drawing, an animated spinner presents that night's multiplier number.
During the promotion, one of the 5X multipliers in the Power Play feature has been replaced with a 10X. If the 10X is selected, that means Powerball prizes will be multiplied by 10 times. For example, if a player wins a $100 prize and the Power Play number is 10, that player would win $1,000. A $200,000 prize with the 10X will be multiplied to $2 million. Jackpot prizes are not eligible for the Power Play option.
When the lottery announced the 10X promotion, it noted that if at least one 10X was not selected during the month of May, the promotion would continue until a 10X is drawn.
Rich points out that Iowa Lottery players have won 13 $1 million prizes since January 2008, and six of them were Powerball with Power Play winners. He's looking forward to seeing if Iowa will have its first $2 million Power Play winner as the 10X promotion continues.
"The extension of this promotion comes at a great time for players in terms of the Powerball jackpot because it's climbed to an estimated $260 million for Wednesday's drawing," Rich said. "This is a perfect time to get in on the jackpot and try the 10X promotion. After all, somebody's got to win it."

*Jackpot prizes are NOT eligible for Power Play.
**If Power Play 10X is drawn, the prize for matching five white balls will be $200,000 multiplied by 10 ($2 million), assuming the prize is not required to be paid on a pari-mutuel basis. If Power Play 5X, 4X, 3X or 2X are drawn, and winners at the Match 5 with Power Play level exceed the available prize fund, prizes may be paid on a pari-mutuel basis and be lower than the $1 million prize.
