Lottery Waits To Hear From Prize Winners From Tuesday's Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa Lottery players won two big prizes in Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing.
Someone who bought a ticket at a Mason City convenience store has won a $1 million Mega Millions® prize in Tuesday's drawing, while another Mega Millions ticket purchased in Sioux City has won a $250,000 prize.
Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said it's exciting to see Iowa continue to collect millionaires.
"We've made updates to both the Mega Millions and Powerball® games that are designed to produce more $1 million winners," Rich said. "The changes certainly seem to be working."
The ticket purchased in Mason City is the second Mega Millions ticket to win a $1 million prize since the game began sales in January in Iowa. It also marks the eighth one million-dollar lottery prize won in Iowa this year.
"So far we've had twice as many millionaires this year as we've had in the past two years combined," Rich said.
The $1 million-winning ticket was sold at the Mills Fleet Farm, 3200 Fourth St. S.W. in Mason City. It was the only ticket nationwide to win a $1 million prize in Tuesday's drawing.
The ticket originally matched the first five numbers but missed the Mega Ball to win a $250,000 prize. But the player who purchased the ticket also added the Megaplier option to the winning play, which made the prize $1 million. All Match 5 Megaplier prizes are $1 million, regardless of the Megaplier number drawn.* The Match 5 Megaplier change was just made to the game on Sept. 14.
Players can add the Megaplier option to Mega Millions purchases for an extra $1 per play. The Megaplier multiplies all other non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3 or 4.
No one won Tuesday's $23 million Mega Millions jackpot, so the prize increases to an estimated $32 million for Friday's drawing.
The Mega Millions ticket winning a $250,000 prize was purchased at Hy-Vee, 4500 Sergeant Road in Sioux City.
"It's really exciting to see big winners in our big jackpot games, even when the jackpots are at lower levels," Rich said. "We're asking everyone to please sign and check their tickets."
The winning numbers in Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing were: 2-10-13-36-38 and Mega Ball 18. The Megaplier number was 3.
Prizes of $1 million must be claimed at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. Prizes up to and including $250,000 may be claimed at one of the lottery's five regional offices in Des Moines, Storm Lake, Mason City, Council Bluffs or Cedar Rapids. Players can claim prizes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. If the winner or winners need information before coming forward to claim the prize, they are invited to call the lottery at 515-725-7900.
*The published prize amounts are based on the expected number of winners sharing in the prize pool. In some cases, when the non-jackpot prize liability exceeds the available prize fund, these prizes may be paid on a pari-mutuel basis and may be lower.
